Section 488(1) of the Local Government Act allows local governments to designate Development Permit Areas (DPAs). Under this authority Ucluelet’s Official Community Plan designates the following DPAs:
Form and Character Development Permit Areas
The objective of the Form and Character designations and guidelines are to guide the development of a pedestrian-oriented, compact and vibrant town which maintains its coastal village character and does the following: protect important public views, create buildings at a scale which is comfortable and inviting to pedestrians, reflect and adapt to the climate and coastal weather, and acknowledge the heritage of Ucluelet.

- Peninsula Road (DPA II)
- Industrial (DPA III)
- Multi-family, Commercial & Mixed Use (DPA IV)
Environmental Development Permit Areas
The objective of the Environmental designations and guidelines are to guide development to ensure that the most sensitive environmental features of a site are protected and ecological functions are not needlessly disturbed by development activities.
- Terrestrial Ecosystems (Mature Forest) (DPA V)
- Stream and Riparian Areas Protection (DPA VI)
- Marine Shoreline (DPA VII)
Hazardous Conditions Development Permit Areas
The objective of the Hazardous Conditions designation and guidelines are to guide development in areas of high risk (an incline of 30 degrees or more).
