November 20, 2024: Residents and visitors are encouraged to take precautions to ensure safety
- Localized Flooding: Localized flooding has been reported in some areas due to storm drains being plugged with debris. Residents are encouraged to check storm drains near their properties and clear any debris if it is safe to do so. This simple action can help reduce water buildup and prevent further flooding. If you encounter significant flooding or blocked drains that cannot be cleared safely, please report the issue to the local Public Works department.
- Crew Safety: Please slow down if driving around the areas where crews are onsite working.
- Wave Activity: Avoid beaches and shorelines. Parks Canada has issued an extreme wave hazard advisory, notifying the public to use extra caution on beaches, shorelines and coastal waters in and around Pacific Rim National Park Reserve on November 20 and November 21. During this time, combined seas are expected to reach up to 7-9 metres. Very large wave conditions will create strong currents and upper-shoreline flooding. Beaches can go from completely dry to several feet under water in only seconds. These surges can be powerful and unpredictable and have the potential to float or roll logs. When combined with high tides, waves can breach areas beyond the upper shoreline, including parking lots.
- Wild Pacific Trail Closure: The Wild Pacific Trail remains closed for public safety.
- Wind Advisory: Very windy conditions expected/ occurring today, peak wind speeds expected this morning, southeasterly gusting to 110 km/h. Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur. Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage. In addition, thunderstorm conditions are occurring. Please avoid unnecessary travel and stay home if you can. Be aware of overhead tree hazards.
- Road Conditions: High winds have resulted in fallen trees and other debris on several roadways, creating unsafe driving conditions. Residents are advised to avoid travel unless necessary to ensure their safety and to allow crews to address hazards effectively. Highway 4 has experienced a closure between Port Alberni and Qualicum beach. Check Drive BC for updates: DriveBC
- Increased Rainfall This Afternoon/ Sandbags: This afternoon Ucluelet will see increased rainfall. Sandbags are available at the Public Works yard if needed. Please call the Public Works line to arrange access: 250-726-8587.
- Power Updates: Update from BC Hydro: "Restoration efforts continue following Tuesday's windstorm. All available crews and contractor crews will continue to work throughout the day to repair the extensive damage to our system, including broken power poles and downed power lines. Crews also have to clear vegetation and trees from roadways to access areas to make repairs, which is taking additional time. We'll continue to share updates for individual outages on our mobile site. With high winds expected again today, we're asking our customers to stay prepared for possible power outages and remember to stay at least 10 metres away from any downed or damaged power lines and report to 911."
Please stay safe and avoid unnecessary travel during this time.
